History
On June 1, 2007, the University of Louisiana at Monroe created the Social Science
Research Laboratory (SSRL) to reinforce and expand inter-disciplinary research efforts.
As such, Drs. McGahan and Sutherlin, representing social psychology and political
science respectively, identified faculty members, referred to as 鈥渞esearch fellows,鈥�
from various disciplines who were interested in:
(a) Interdisciplinary research collaboration
(b) Working with undergraduate and graduate students on applied research and development
projects with the potential to positively impact our community
By early Fall 2007, the SSRL had research fellows at ULM and elsewhere representing
psychology, political science, sociology, social work, finance, and educational technology.
Further, the SSRL continues to actively cultivate relationships with other universities
in the Delta region. As for the past, the SSRL created relationships with faculty
at Louisiana Tech University, Grambling State University and other regional universities,
in an attempt to create the foundation for a research and development corridor in
northern Louisiana. The SSRL will continue to create and maintain relationships with
fellow universities nurturing common goals and academic criteria to be the most beneficial
for our students, faculty, staff, and the local community. 听听

ULM鈥檚 Sutherlin works in D.C. with leaders from the Delta
Associate Professor of political science at the University of Louisiana at Monroe,
Dr. John W. Sutherlin, recently conducted workshops in Washington, D.C. as part of
a leadership training grant. 听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听听
Dr. John W. Sutherlin, associate professor of political science and co-director the
social science research lab (SSRL) at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, recently
attended the Delta Leadership Institute's (DLI) inaugural four-day executive education
training at Harvard University鈥檚 John F. Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge,
Mass.
ULM joins Delta Regional Authority
The University of Louisiana at Monroe's Social Science Research Lab (SSRL) joins the
University of Mississippi and Arkansas State University to develop the Delta Regional
Authority Leadership Academy.

Community Partners & Programs
In the Social Science Research Laboratory, we feel it is crucial to create and maintain
partnerships with community programs and organizations. In the past, the SSRL has
partnered with entities such as AmeriCorps. Many of our students volunteered with
AmeriCorps, and discovered it to be such a valuable learning experience for their
current, as well as future, endeavors.
